Jumping Rope

The little child. A stupid, stupid little child
Stands on the playground at grade school recess
Swinging one end of a rope in his stupid little hand
While one end flops limply with no one to hold it.
"Jump rope?" he asks of his brethren class mates.
He wraps off the bitter end to the monkey bars
And attempts to give it a few more swings
Only to have it slip free, mocking his pitiful effort.
Today is his birthday. "Jump rope?" he asks.
He waits until every last image has faded from sight
Before he lets loose of his end.
And goes home.
