Upon Not Being Carded
at the Age of Thirty-Eight

The banalities
you recite
are not comforting.
It had to happen sometime.
Think of the alternative.
When what you really
want to do
is get down on your knees
and bawl. I'm still
a teenager.
So then who
is this repulsive woman
in my hotel room?
You could build skyscrapers
in the circles under her eyes.
