Mona’s Monster

Mona’s monster tumbled
toward the edge of the
laptop screen
with a ram’s skull,
eight furry-clawed legs
and a tail that left a trail
testifying his distant relationship
to the frumious Bandersnatch.

Mona’s monster, never mimsy,
gasped for air and fleas
and slumbering dragonflies of prehistory,
too large to move fast
for his prey.
