My Friend

Jim asked me if I am crazy
when he saw me in the park
watching a furry black caterpillar
crawling up the trunk of a tree.
“What the hell are you doing?” he asked.
“I’m watching the future,” I replied.
He said he did not understand me,
walked away,
and said he’d never ask me again.
