then a rapid retreat behind shuttered eyes

that fell apart in paroxysms of ingenuousness
 
She recalled a relationship doomed
once adolescent fantasy gave way to reality
 
He recalled an acquiescent neophyte
misguidedly diverted by irrational perceptions

She recalled a self-opinionated prig
Who confused long words with original thoughts
