The first few lines
set the tone
and shape and guide
the poem until
they might not
be its essence.
But still I love
to cradle them
between my ear
and mind. And as
the poem develops
I try to work them in
to different parts,
but each time
the poem looks at me
a little more
disapprovingly,
until I know that I
must let them go.
