 At the Beach

I learned to swim at the beach
splashing in the shallows,
until one day I floated and
leapt on the back of a wave.

How thrilling to ride that barrel
all the way to shore.

For hours I paddled and kicked
in the glittering sea.
Then I grew gills and dove deep,
rubbing my scales on the rough sand floor.
