Before

Before the Shipping Forecast
precisely when they say
a war began or ended
X years ago today

or someone famous died
or man stepped on the moon
or Brave New World was published
or a blasphemous cartoon

I sit here and remember
how it was that I first knew
time could not go backwards –

not for me and you.
