Merlin's Task

It’s said that Merlin bore them here
Around 5,000 years ago.
I know they cost the bearer dear.

The sarsens and the bluestones rear
Above the Plain. What lies below?
It’s said that Merlin bore them here;

The lintels lying like a bier
Weigh each two dozen tons or so.
I know they cost the bearer dear.

Each tore right through, a ripe menhir,
And issued in a bloody flow.
It’s said that Merlin bore them here:

A sacrifice or souvenir?
A victory of sorts, although
I know they cost the bearer dear.

Through Logres up to Lincolnshire
The old way runs. Though none can know,
It’s said that Merlin bore them here.
I know they cost the bearer dear.
