Gravedigger, gravedigger, what is that sound?
“The grief of your father six feet in the ground.”

Gravedigger, gravedigger, dead men don’t grieve.
“Their children believe what they want to believe.”

Gravedigger, gravedigger, what kind of pain . . . ?
“The living can’t guess, and the dead can’t explain.”

Gravedigger, gravedigger, what does he know?
“What everyone learns on the day they’re laid low.”

Gravedigger, gravedigger, what should I do?
“All the good that you can: the same earth waits for you.”
