Mother Teresa

She wrote to various confessors
about 'the darkness' inside her
Candid letters spelling out the
misery of loving
the 'Absent One'
Her dark night of the soul dragged on and on
until an ordinary grave put an end to it

I too have had my moments of doubt

Looking out from a Grecian mountain top
At a bay hemmed in with a blue surreal

Or when love appeared after I thought
All thoughts of love had to be abandoned

Doubt also crept in as I watched
From the relative safety of collective darkness
Actors bringing to life on stage
A country in the last agony of dying

It persists, this doubt about 'His' nonexistence,
until I remember
That it was I who
climbed the mountain,
sought love,
placed
Words on the page for actors to mouth

Faith is a hand painted set
Behind it lies a door
That leads you to an ordinary street
Coated with the everyday grime
Of hope.
