At a Primary School Carol Concert
And when Mary and Joseph had arrived in Bethlehem,
after what seemed a very slow journey
down the central aisle,
with time for photographs and sore amazement,
and the innkeeper, friendly despite his gravity,
had shown them to his stable,
the tiny angels of the Lord came down
from the facing choir stalls,
flapping their tinsel-fringed wings
to assemble before the congregation,
where one of the flanking angels
settled at my pew.
I was touched
by the hem of her garment
as she stood or hovered there,
bursting with seriousness,
and it all seemed almost believable
to me as well, just then.
