Powered Flight

What flights of fancy I've been on!
The places that I've almost been,
the wonders that I might have seen,
the daring things I've nearly done.

The marvellous aircraft I designed,
such intricate and fine machines
to take me to exotic scenes
(though only ever in my mind.)

My fantasies have soared so high,
But all of them have crashed and burned.
Yet still I dreamed; I never learned
that none of them could really fly.

Aerodynamically unsound,
Icarus tumbled from the blue;
likewise, my dreams did not come true,
I never even left the ground.
