Longing
—Inspired by the song “Dil Dhoondhta Hai”
by Gulzar, from the film Mausam,
1975
Deep in my heart’s a longing for those nights
And days of leisure when I sat and gazed
Upon my love’s face glowing with delight.
The westerlies blew. Covered in sheets, white
And thick, we stayed up late outdoors, and lazed.
Deep in my heart’s a longing for those nights
When sometimes we stargazed. In the soft light
Of autumn evenings, I was quite amazed
To see my love’s face glowing with delight
As I unveiled her face. It turned midnight
In the courtyard. Our life was a sweet daze.
Deep in my heart’s a longing for those nights
When she lay calmly resting. I lay right
Beside, eyes closed, then turned over sideways
And opened them. Her pure face glowed delight
While time stood still. Eyes moist, I held her tight.
The valleys echoed silently. Snow glazed
The hilltops. My heart longs for tranquil nights
When she was close by, glowing with delight.
