In Chemo Limbo

Liver enzymes, platelets, white cells –
Blood test numbers don’t look good.
Docs said this would be a chemo
Day. Now they don’t think it should.

Drugs have knocked my insides sideways.
Time to let these organs be,
Back off doses of the toxin
That both heals and sickens me.

Chemicals that wipe out cancer
Cells are heroes and outlaws.
Wary doctors watch my lab work,
Waiting out this treatment pause.

I’ve got more infusions coming,
Even if I can’t say when.
Once my flesh is fit and healthy,
They can poison me again.
