Forever Blowing Bubbles

A new study by the scientists from SETI and the University of California, published in Marine Mammal Science, has documented humpbacks producing large bubble rings during friendly encounters with humans that seem to be an attempt at sending messages.

The scientists are in the news today –
it’s whale communication time again!
The humpbacks might have something nice to say
to humans. Let’s observe them in their pen
and document what happens out at sea –
they’re blowing bubbles at us! Very cool!
They’re coming up to boats so smilingly,
to use their special interaction tool!
The talk then turns, again, to how AI
will help us all to understand. The whales
observe and smile ironically and sigh –
their breath ascends in perfect circle trails,
the bubbles, in their pens and by the boats.
They’ve watched us for a while. These are their notes.
