From the Greek of Crinagoras of Mitylene

moon

And she herself, on evening’s rim,
Shrank into night – affliction’s husk –,
Seeing her gracious homonym
Fall breathless into Hades’ dusk.
For she had shared herself, as bright things do;
And when Selene died, her light died too.

καὶ αὐτὴ ἤχλυσεν ἀκρέσπερος ἀντέλλουσα
μήνη, πένθος ἑὸν νυκτὶ καλυψαμένη,
οὕνεκα τὴν χαρίεσσαν ὁμώνυμον εἶδε Σελήνην
ἄπνουν εἰς ζοφερὸν δυομένην ἀίδην.
κείνῃ γὰρ καὶ κάλλος ἑοῦ κοινώσατο φωτὸς,
καὶ θάνατον κείνης μίξεν ἑῷ κνέφεϊ.
