Higher Dimensions

The koi carp in the pond swim left and right,
forward and backward—that’s their universe.
The larger world above is out of sight.
But what if I were quickly to immerse
my hand into their paradise of plants,
bubbles and rocks and snails and slanting light
and hoist one from his home. The fish might glance
around my larger world in utter fright.

“You’ll never believe where I’ve just been!” he’ll cry
when plopped back in. It will of course be true.
The others won’t believe a word. He’ll try
to tell them of the trees, the sky, so blue—
the third dimension! Us? We haven’t a notion
of what may lie beyond our cosmic ocean.
