A Room of One’s Own
Angela
Merkel, August 2019: ‘I wish for a room in which I can go to
be sad’.
I wish I had a room to go to to be sad
I wish I had a room to go to to be bad
I wish I had a room to go to to remember
I wish I had a room to go to to forget
I wish I had a room for when I’m under threat
and wish to be returned to sender
I wish I had a room
I wish I had a room when I want to be myself
whichever version I decide to take down from the shelf
I wish there was a room where I could be someone else
I wish I had a room to go to when I go
too far away from everybody else’s status quo
I wish I had a room
I wish I had a room where I’d keep a thousand books
with access barred as much to friends as enemies and crooks
I wish I had a room with no timers to go ping
where no telephones could ring
I wish I had a room for whatever strange desire
I never tell even myself is what I’m wishing for
I wish I had a room
I wish I had a room to go to when I want
a room without an elephant already in the room
I wish I had a room to go to when I don’t
know why I want to go there, even though I won’t
need to have the answer or even ask the question
I wish I had a room to go to which I wish
was there for me to go to when I wish to make a wish
I wish I had a room
