Le Rayon Vert, Brittany
I’ve found what I call home here
on this crooked coast
where ships and lives and fortunes
have come to grief, storm-tossed
but still I watch the sunset
for the chance I’ll glimpse the light
said to flash green when it’s cloudless
for an instant before night
with you again beside me
in silence, as is now
our way of being together
words lacking the know-how . . .
You claim it’s often signalled
when I’ve blinked, or not been there,
but maybe this calm evening
will mean today we share
a moment we’ll remember
because both, in awkward awe,
on a far horizon
the same illusion saw.
