Considering a Cast of The Apotheosis of Homer

Who Homer was can be a matter for
debate. Did this one man recount the war
in which both Hector and Achilles died?
Then did he trace Odysseus, who tried
for twenty years to reach his native shore?

The ancient cult of Homer would deplore
such questions. Zeus himself could not ignore
the many advocating far and wide
who Homer was.

One John Soane knew enough about the lore
to want a cast (impressive as décor)
of what depicted Homer deified,
the stone original inscribed with pride.
Perhaps we should not challenge anymore
who Homer was.
