Collecting Insects

we harvested insects
as some would harvest fruit
pluck from blade and blossom
our crop of grasshoppers

rows of tiny enclosures
decorated our bedroom;
butterfly, mantis and moth
filled our miniature zoo

a fight broke out
over one exotic specimen
saw us tumble across the floor
overturning cages, crushing containers

when Mum came to investigate
the sounds of destruction
she was greeted by a frantic swarm
- thought for a moment our anger had grown wings
